How to visually increase the area
We often dream that the summer cottage has become at least a little more spacious. But how to push its boundaries, without moving the fence and not capturing someone else's territory? It turns out that this is possible if you work with the prospect and use some non-standard methods of organizing space. The result will exceed all expectations: you will even have to convince the watchful neighbors that the number of your acres has not increased.

Manicured lawn expands the space
Imagine that on your site there is a lawn on which grass has not been mowed for a long time. It has grown greatly, tufts of turf have appeared, and weeds that have gained strength have bloomed. What has the site become? He visually declined. And then the lawn mower walked along the lawn, the view immediately changed. The site expanded, the feeling of tightness disappeared, the fence moved over. In the same way, the field of view that has grown under shrubs and trees reduces the viewing area. Mow it and it will become much better.
Experiment with the lawn shape. Only for a few sites is a transverse lawn suitable. Make the lawn longitudinal and give it an oval shape, then from a distance it will seem more spacious. Your site will greatly benefit from such a layout. And if you add side “pockets” with grassed bushes or several large flowers planted with grass, the lawn will “grow up” a little more.
You can plant a single plant on the lawn, lay a boulder or several large stones on it. It is better to place these objects not in the central part, but to shift the center of the composition a little to the side. Once my attention was attracted by a lawn on which white gladiolus blossomed. Only a few plants, planted at a sufficient distance from each other, transformed the appearance of green space. As if someone had spread a huge emerald carpet, decorated with magnificent flowers.
Thickness eats up space
The size of the plot will seem much larger if medium-tall shrubs are planted in the background, and tall trees further behind them. The remote part of the territory can be occupied by your own "forest", even if it’s very small. He will also work on expanding the space. It is better to plant it with such traditional trees as birch, spruce, pine, mountain ash, maple, etc., because in our mind they are connected with the image of the forest. No need to be afraid to plant trees close to one another. Some will grow, others will be far behind in growth. But in the real forest there is its own hierarchy.
Thickened plantings visually reduce the size of the site, so you will need to regularly remove the lower branches of trees and form shrubs. Let the branches close above our head, and not at the level of the body. In pines in spring, young “candles” can be shortened by half so that the trees become more fluffy and do not tend to rise. Some trees are best planted with a bouquet, because in nature they often settle on one spot. And since we are reconstructing a forest model, it is worth leaving places for small clearings.
With this layout, the owner of the site has the opportunity to walk in the "forest zone", escaping from the heat there, recharging with energy, and if you're lucky, then pick mushrooms. And how good it is to rest in this “forest” in a deck chair! Surprisingly, such happiness requires very little space.
Recently, I noticed a high dense hedge "legged." She perfectly hid the house with the plot from prying eyes. All the lower branches were removed at an altitude of about 30-40 cm from the ground, so they did not interfere with seeing an even row of the bases of shrub trunks and a well-groomed lawn under them. As a result of such an interesting design solution, the rather narrow space between the road and the fence has significantly expanded visually.

Straight tracks - not for a small area
A walkway can become one of the most important elements of garden design, even if it is not made of carefully selected stones or cobblestones of complex masonry. To expand the space, it is more important not the material, but the shape and direction. Most preferred is the diagonal placement of paths. The winding paths of the simplest paving slabs or gravel are also able to completely change the idea of the size of the site. Even a slight bend visually increases the space.
The paths, consisting of short straight lines that suddenly make a sharp turn, also cope with this task. There is an alluring sense of expectation of a miracle and a desire to find out what is hiding behind a bend. Of course, traditional straight tracks are very convenient. But what about a small area, the size of which they conceal? You can create a whole network of tracks that will break the site into functional zones. In this case, emphasis is placed on the design of mini plots.
A great solution to expand the space is the creation of so-called green rooms, fenced off by pergolas, decorative fences with fake gates, ladders with 1-3 steps, humpback bridges, stone supporting walls, arches, etc. The attention of the audience will be it is occupied by a constant change of scenery and such charming details as young growth, supporting walls that have grown on a flat stone, branches of weeping willow spread on the ground, etc. A walk through such a garden will be a long and fascinating journey.

How to visually increase a decorative pond
Decorative pond is perfect for experiments with a visual increase in the surface of the water surface and depth. Line the entire bottom of the shallow pool with stones, especially light ones, and it will seem even finer. Remove stones from the central part of the bottom - you will get a "deep pool". Dark film or plastic will also give a sense of depth. No wonder the film and forms for the pool are rarely made light or bright. Trees and shrubs planted around the pool also make it deeper.
Work on expanding the space and some design techniques. Put, for example, in some corner a large flat stone hanging over the water - you get a grotto or some kind of underwater cave. Now add the other on the opposite side - and everyone will understand your hint of a crossing. A small shallow decorative pool will greatly benefit if an isthmus is made of stones laid across the bottom. They will divide the pool into two parts, while visually increasing the total area.
The Japanese perfectly recreate nature in their tiny kindergartens. They have many ways to make people change their mind about the modest size of artificial ponds. So, the bridge over the water is most often built not from one board, but from several short ones docked in a broken line. The longitudinal location of such a bridge above the surface of the water visually increases the size of the pond.
The area for contemplating the water surface (a bench or a gazebo) is best placed near a narrower part of the pond. With this option, the gaze will not immediately hit the opposite bank.
Do not turn the pond into a tank filled with algae biomass. A small amount of algae and coastal plants looks better and visually increases the size of even a small water area.

Isn't that magic?
Suppose guests gathered at your dacha. Children make noise and play outdoor games, adults have fun in their own way: they communicate at the table and bustle around the barbecue. Surprisingly, no one bothers each other. And the nearest neighbors continue to enjoy the silence in their areas. Moreover, all this happens in an ordinary horticultural partnership. Fiction, you say? Not at all. Just found a brilliant solution that allows you to turn the site into a fairy-tale world with water cascades, beautiful terraces, multi-tiered stairs and a variety of pergolas.
All parts of the garden are surprisingly interconnected, so you can walk on it for a long time with different "paths". Such an unusual layout allows you to forget about the size of the site, located on the edge of the ravine bank of the river. And since the gazebo, in which all family members and their guests spend a lot of time, is slightly lower than the main part of the site, there is a feeling of complete remoteness from all worldly things. A picturesque view of the river with flood meadows and peacefully grazing goats and cows complements this pastoral picture and becomes part of a single ensemble.
The quiet murmur of an artificial waterfall and sun glare on the water create a spa mood. No fuss of a densely populated partnership, skirmishes between neighbors, car exhaust. And on this wonderful land rare exotic plants in containers grow and bloom, garden trees abundantly bear fruit. And what a crop is harvested in a well-equipped garden and in a greenhouse! There was a place even for a sports ground. The creative approach and skillful handling of space made it possible to turn a small site into that paradise that any summer resident could dream of.
